The Rolex GMT Master 1963 Ref 1675 Pepsi is a true classic and a must-have for any serious Rolex collector. Its combination of historical significance, iconic design, and practical functionality make it one of the most revered models in the Rolex catalog.
The Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 with the Long E dial and fuchsia bezel is one of the most sought-after and collectible variations of the iconic GMT-Master series. The Ref. 1675 is beloved among vintage Rolex enthusiasts for its historical significance, aesthetic details, and practical dual-time zone functionality.
Rolex GMT-Master, originally introduced in 1954 as a collaboration with Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) for their pilots to track multiple time zones during transcontinental flights.
The GMT-Master Ref. 1675 was introduced in 1959 and produced until 1980, making it one of the longest-running references in Rolex history.
The case is made of stainless steel, known for its durability and resistance to corrosion. Rolex’s stainless steel, known as “Oystersteel,” is a proprietary blend that is highly resilient.
The case measures 40mm in diameter, which was relatively large for its time but has become a standard size in modern watches. This size gives the watch a bold presence on the wrist, making it both functional and stylish.
The Ref. 1675 introduced the crown guards to protect the winding crown, giving the watch a more robust appearance. Earlier models from this reference had “pointed crown guards,” while later versions transitioned to more rounded crown guards.
The “Long E” refers to a specific dial variation in which the E in “ROLEX” on the dial has a longer middle bar, giving it a distinct appearance. This is a highly desirable feature for collectors and is only found on certain GMT-Master 1675 models from the 1960s and early 1970s.
The dial features tritium lume hour markers and hands, which would have originally glowed in the dark but have since developed a pleasing patina over time, characteristic of vintage watches.
The hour markers are round, with rectangular markers at 6 and 9 o’clock, and a triangle at 12 o’clock.
The red 24-hour hand is another signature of the GMT-Master, used in conjunction with the rotating bezel to track a second time zone. Earlier versions of the 1675 featured a small, “pointed” 24-hour hand, while later versions (from the late 1960s onward) transitioned to the larger “stick” 24-hour hand.
The dial includes the famous Cyclops lens over the date window at 3 o’clock, which magnifies the date for easier reading.
One of the most collectible features of this specific 1675 model is the fuchsia bezel insert, which refers to the vibrant pinkish-purple color of the red half of the iconic “Pepsi” bezel. Over time, certain red inserts have faded to this striking fuchsia hue due to UV exposure and other environmental factors. This is a highly sought-after trait for collectors, as it gives the watch a unique and visually stunning appearance.
The blue and red “Pepsi” bezel was designed to differentiate between day and night hours. The 24-hour rotating bezel allows for the tracking of a second time zone, making it a favorite of pilots and travelers.
The Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 is powered by the Caliber 1570, an automatic movement introduced by Rolex in the mid-1960s. This movement is renowned for its precision and durability.
A 26-jewel automatic movement, the Caliber 1570 operates at a frequency of 19,800 vibrations per hour (2.75 Hz) and has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. It features a hacking mechanism (the second hand stops when the crown is pulled out for more precise time-setting), which was introduced in later versions of the 1675.
The Caliber 1570 is COSC-certified, meaning it meets stringent Swiss standards for precision.
The watch was serviced Septemeber 2024. Next service interval is therefore in the next 5-7 years.
The watch is fitted with an acrylic (plexiglass) crystal, which was the standard material used by Rolex during this era. Acrylic crystals are durable and resistant to shattering, and they can be easily polished to remove scratches.
Our GMT-Master 1675 is paired with a Rolex Jubilee bracelet. The Jubilee is a five-link design, offering more flexibility and a dressier look.
The lug width is 20mm, making it compatible with a wide range of aftermarket straps for added versatility.
The combination of the Long E dial and the fuchsia bezel insert makes this GMT-Master Ref. 1675 one of the most collectible variations among vintage Rolex watches. The faded fuchsia bezel is particularly sought after due to its unique color and rarity, and the Long E dial adds to its appeal as a distinctive collector’s piece.
